From Worcestershire’s DCS:
As we reach the height of summer, it is hard to ignore just how much continues to move at pace across our region. While many colleagues will be taking some well-earned leave over the coming weeks, the reality is that children’s services rarely slow down, and there remains a significant amount of activity taking place across the West Midlands.
Alongside the day-to-day challenges that leaders, practitioners and partners continue to navigate, many of us are also working through a period of considerable change. Recent decisions around Local Government Reorganisation have understandably become a significant focus for Worcestershire and indeed other areas within the region. While the direct impact may currently be felt most acutely by a small number of authorities, I recognise that uncertainty and change can affect colleagues across the wider system. At times like these, the strength of our regional relationships becomes even more important. The willingness of leaders to support one another, share learning and remain focused on outcomes for children and families continues to be one of the defining characteristics of the West Midlands.
Despite the pressures, we have much to be proud of. Since our last update, we have continued to make significant progress on the Regional Care Cooperative programme. The successful bid was only the beginning, and a huge amount of work is now underway to turn that shared ambition into something that delivers tangible benefits for children, young people and families across the region. The commitment shown by colleagues from every part of the West Midlands has once again demonstrated what can be achieved when we work collectively towards a common goal.
There is also exciting progress within our Alternatives to Remand programme. This work reflects our shared determination to find better solutions for vulnerable children and young people, helping to reduce unnecessary escalation while improving outcomes through partnership working and innovation. It is a complex agenda, but one that highlights our collective commitment to keeping children at the centre of decision-making.
I am equally pleased to acknowledge the recent success of the regional Room Makers bid. This is another example of the West Midlands identifying opportunities, working together and securing investment that will make a genuine difference. Alongside this, we have now submitted an Expression of Interest for the Home Again programme. Whatever the outcome, the strength of the partnership behind the submission reflects both the ambition and collaborative spirit that exists across our region.
Taken together, these developments demonstrate that the West Midlands is far from standing still. We continue to shape national reforms, attract investment and develop innovative approaches to some of the most complex challenges facing children's services.
Finally, as we enjoy what has thankfully been a spell of genuine summer weather, I hope everyone is able to find some time to rest and recharge. Whether that means holidays, days out with family, catching up with friends or simply enjoying a quieter pace for a few days, those moments matter. The work we do is demanding, and maintaining our own wellbeing is essential if we are to continue supporting others.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment, leadership and partnership. I look forward to continuing our work together through the remainder of the year.
Kind Regards,
Adam Johnston

Regional Peer Review:
Colleagues from across the region recently came together for a highly positive Regional Peer Review in Warwickshire. The review provided valuable opportunities for shared learning, reflection and professional challenge, enabling participants to showcase effective practice, learn from different perspectives and explore new approaches to common challenges. These peer reviews continue to be one of the strengths of our sector-led improvement offer, creating space for honest conversations, collaboration and innovation while strengthening relationships across the West Midlands.
Spotlight on Your Regional Team:
Following last month's introduction to Paul Brewster, our Relationship & Communications Manager, we're continuing our Spotlight on Your Regional Team feature by introducing another familiar name from across the West Midlands ADCS Network. This month, we shine a light on Nafeesa Ali, whose work behind the scenes helps keep the region's extensive programme of meetings, events, communications and financial processes running smoothly.

Many of you may have heard my name or seen it appear in emails over the years, but perhaps never had the chance to meet me in person. So, this is an opportunity to put a face to the name!
I have been the Programme Support Officer for WM ADCS for seven years, providing the administrative, operational and financial support that helps keep the network running smoothly. A key part of my role is managing complex diaries, often coordinating meetings involving up to 14 senior leaders at very short notice. I also organise meetings and events, book venues and meeting spaces, and support a range of strategic groups, including SEND, Lead Members, and the Residential Workforce.
I pride myself on being friendly, approachable, tenacious, and efficient, and I genuinely enjoy building strong working relationships with colleagues across the region. My communication skills are one of my greatest strengths, enabling me to work confidently with senior leaders, directors' assistants, and external partners, often acting as the link between multiple people and organisations. I'm known as a reliable go-to person who gets things done, solves problems and keeps everyone informed. Alongside this, I manage significant financial administration, including invoicing, payments and credit notes, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail in everything I do.
